I like to play around with photo images to re-render them into interesting visual effects. Sometimes these effects take on in my eye the look and feel of an art object because of the blending of material form, lighting and teased out colors.
Here’s a charming photo borrowed from Flickr

Now here is the visual effect I produced using Picnik

I prefer the visual combination of form, light and color in the latter digitized image.

This image got my attention because it feels so open and not simply an erotic pander.
Apparently it is part of an art exhibition in China these days. The whole thing seems quite unchinese to me!

today I must mention words, colours, drawings and small neat stories published in the NY Times under the Maira Kalman byline. This a monthly posting that I have enjoyed since it appeared 3 or 4 months ago. The whole effect is magical for me and many of her readers. The combination of four forms of rather ordinary and ineffable art strike a major chord of magic in my head and heart.
I have great respect for her obvious natural talent. For me this is an illustration of the unusualness of art that comes from a human heart, imagination and mind. Maira K gives me a sense of the colours she sees in a way that no photography can. But I like both, photos and Maira’s simple visual art form. Then she piles on top of the visual, the words and the small stories that in a strange way evoke the story of the unusualness of ordinary ife in so many parts of this world.
Visual images enhanced by well chosen words and perceptive thoughts about the content of the images are the most enticing form of art for me. More enticing than a Picasso or a Renoir painting!! I have a great appetite for gratification of my soul by word, image and story.
I envy Maira for the gentleness and perceptiveness of her art form.
