The connection between cooking for yourself and diet

Michael Pollan is well known, to me at least, for his knowledgeable  discourse about food and its preparation in this 21st century in which so much of ordinary life has been given up by too many of us to the corporate solution.

I was intrigued by his NYT magazine piece this weekend because he began by focusing on Julia Child because of the movie “Julie and Julia” and the fact that Julia Child’s PBS TV program about French cooking was such a  significant part of his own growing up since his mother watched Julia’s TV show often.

Most revealing is the thought in the last paragraph of his essay:

Yet Balzer himself made it clear that he recognizes all that the decline of everyday cooking has cost us. So I asked him how, in an ideal world, Americans might begin to undo the damage that the modern diet of industrially prepared food has done to our health.

“Easy. You want Americans to eat less? I have the diet for you. It’s short, and it’s simple. Here’s my diet plan: Cook it yourself. That’s it. Eat anything you want — just as long as you’re willing to cook it yourself.”

Sounds simple, inexpensive and to the point. So get up off your ass viewing “Food Network” and start that meal for yourself!
