First suicide from 160th storey of Burj Khalifa

with one comment

I just copied a front view of the world’s tallest building, which is in Dubai. An extraordinary image of the “tallest tower”.

To think that this building is in a desert environment! And here is the link to the BBC article about this “first suicide”.

Google Earth offers a new form of public art

I just snipped this from a view of Dubai‘s skyscrapers offered by Google Earth. What an image with 3-Dness

Computation at its most intriguing!

I can only reflect back on my work as an SE for IBM Canada in 1959 and 1960 working with those clunkers, the 650, the 602A and the 604. Then later on the 350 RAMAC. That was 40 years ago but I remember what it was like then!

The world’s tallest building in its ‘hood in Dubai

leave a comment »

It’s now officially the Burj Khalifa, named after the official head of Abu Dhabi. That is expected to be a recognition that the shaky finances of Dubai‘s commercial real estate needed an injection of considerable capital at the end of 2009. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are both members of the United Arab Emirates and the latter is relatively oil rich.

But I was really interested in posting this photo of the Burj K since I hadn’t seen an image of it in its ‘hood, which seems so Middle East:

It’s significant to mention that there is an underground metro system running under that street to the left of the Burj K.

Dubai may have a small land area and sparse population as any desert nation must, but it sure has its share of big city features!

The tallest building in the world, Burj Dubai, opens!

Burj Khalifa

Image via Wikipedia

According to Wikipedia it is 621 ft. higher than the second tallest structure in the world, the KVLY TV tower in Blanchard, ND.

The CN Tower is now the 4th tallest in the world.

Here’s the link to views of this unique building, Burj (tower in Arabic) Dubai, in a very small country, which is experiencing a shaky financial future.

And Dubai has a Metro service! Check out the map et al.

Update 2011/6/5: It was renamed the Burj Khalifa when the original developers ran out of money and had to be bailed out by rich Abu Dabi.
