I think that the Rogers Cup is living up to its rep of being a venue for up and coming tennis pros. The two top guys have been put down. I saw Nadal on TV the other night and he looked shaky, especially when he was getting ready to serve. And he didn’t seem so ready to chase down every ball. I guess the condition of his knees gives him a reason to throttle his power game.

From NY Times:

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Serbia’s Novak Djokovic crushed Nikolay Davydenko 6-1 7-5 to win the Masters Cup Sunday, underlining his credentials as a major challenger to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the top of men’s tennis.

The Australian Open champion, who lost all his matches without winning a set on his debut at the season-ending shootout last year, earned $1.24 million to move to within 10 ranking points of world number two Federer.

The Swiss defending champion crashed out at the round-robin stage, while world number one Nadal missed the $4.45 million tournament through injury.

Nadal will be #1 but not this week, nor next!

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Rafael Nadal doesn’t mind the wait.

Weary from two months of nonstop winning, Nadal got run around the court Saturday and, ultimately, bounced from the Cincinnati Masters one step shy of another title match. Instead, Novak Djokovic reached the final with a 6-1, 7-5 victory that only delayed the inevitable atop the world rankings.

In two weeks, the 22-year-old Spaniard automatically will move up a spot to No. 1.

Now it’s up to Roger to show if he has the competitive stomach/desire to bring his game and world ranking back up.

Next stop Beijing Olympics!
