I thought this headline offered interesting views:

China defies Vatican on bishop conclave

But the report I read left little doubt that this was all about an open clash of two authoritarian regimes. How can that be interesting to a thinker like me?

But I feel empathy for any regime that contests the “administrative authority” of the Vatican.

Pope says societies must have GOD!

While the Dalai Lama was pursuing “peace” in Vancouver, Pope Benedict was advising Czechs, Poles et al:

In a meeting with religious leaders on Sunday, the pope emphasized that Europe had been deeply shaped by its Christian roots. Invoking his own background as an academic, he warned the Czech academic community against allowing a modern-day preoccupation with reason to cancel out faith.

“What will happen if our culture builds itself only on fashionable arguments, with little reference to a genuine historical intellectual tradition, or on the viewpoints that are most vociferously promoted and most heavily funded?” he asked.

Some young Christians said they felt alienated by a socially conservative pope, who appeared more intent on preserving the church’s traditions than on adapting it to modern times.

Daniel Barton, 25, a youth leader in the country’s largest Protestant denomination, argued that Benedict’s “moral absolutism” made him, in some ways, more conservative than Jesus.

“A pope’s visit should energize all Christians, but I find his social conservatism quite ridiculous,” he said. “The Vatican and this pope have been absolutizing the traditions of the past without thinking of the reasoning behind these rules, which is what Jesus was fighting against.”

Jan Richter contributed reporting from Brno, and Rachel Donadio from Rome.

American culture is dumb and dumber

Charles Darwin.

Today there is going to be a mad stampede in most large cities as American nitwits apparently want to get a copy of Dan Brown‘s latest trash lit, The Last Symbol.

But apparently no US distributor is interested in distribution rights to “Creation” a film biography of Charles Darwin. American cultural sensibilities, which deal with guns in public and covert and overt racism toward their President, can’t deal with the story of Charles Darwin. The crassness of this makes me want to puke literally. I wonder does that mean that I won’t get to see that film?

Dan Brown’s trash lit along with JK Rowling‘s is fine, but real people and an authentic story about a renowned scientist are just too “controversial”. Sometimes I lose all hope about a better and freer tomorrow when a key part of Western civilization is dominated by childish fantasy. For F..ks sake get over it. Evolution is approved by the Vatican and 99% of the cardinals and bishops. But Dan Brown’s trash lit is not~

Stamp machine of the Vatican City Post Office.Image via Wikipedia

Quite a while ago I encountered an excellent article in Reason, the serious magazine and linked to it in a post titled The Vatican and St. Augustine about science and religion”.

I have noticed that viewers of my blog do click on this post and the article from Reason. So I will repeat the link since I got so much out of re-reading the article this morning after posting immediately below about Judson’s gem.
